The upcoming introduction of the advanced M-346 aircraft (or T-346A as designated by the Italian MoD) will make the Italian Air Force Frecce Tricolori the most powerful aerobatic team in Europe. While several demonstration teams are set to transition from jets to turboprop aircraft, such as Spain's Patrulla Aguila, the Frecce Tricolori will get a high-performance aircraft, comparable to front-line fighters. The M-346 is much more than an advanced trainer, the Italian Air Force has also used the type in the Aggressor role to challenge advanced fighters such as the Eurofighter Typhoon.

The M-346 was not conceived by Leonardo as a replacement for the MB-339, the current aircraft of the Frecce Tricolori, but as a higher-level platform, closer to fourth and fifth generation fighters. It is also marketed in the light fighter variant with state-of-the-art sensors and the ability to employ a wide range of weapons.

The ITAF currently operates 18 T-346As that are the backbone of the International Flight Training School (IFTS) in Decimomannu, Sardinia, where pilots receive advanced training (Phase IV). Italy's acquisition plan includes the purchase of a further 20 T-346As, 15 of which will be destined for the Frecce Tricolori. They will receive the necessary adaptations to operate within the aerobatic team such as smoke systems.

The Frecce Tricolori will also receive a new livery, which was unveiled in September 2024 during the rollout of the new M-346PAN. The new dress was designed by Pininfarina, a famous Italian designer that operates mainly in the automotive industry, especially in luxury cars.

The M-346 will allow the Frecce Tricolori to continue to offer top-level displays that will include some new figures, while others will remain the same or will be adapted to the different performances of the aircraft. It is also confirmed that they will continue to fly the record number of ten aircraft. The transition to the M-346PAN is currently planned over the next 3 years.
