Lockheed Martin's F-35 fifth-generation fighter aircraft continues to enjoy strong sales in Eastern Europe. After being bought by Poland (32) and the Czech Republic (24), Romania has also selected the F-35A to boost its air defenses, the nation's Supreme Defense Council (CSAT) announced on April 11.

The nation has not currently provided details about the quantity and timing, however the order will first have to be approved by the government and parliament and the leaders of the Romanian Air Force believe that the new aircraft will not enter service before 2030. Local sources say the deal could comprise 16 to 24 jets.

Romania's interest in the F-35 had already been known for some time, it was also confirmed last year by President Klaus Iohannis, who chairs the CSAT.

Bucharest has long since started the process of modernizing the Romanian Air Force which in the last decade has involved the purchase of 49 second-hand F-16 jets (17 from Portugal and 32 from Norway).

According to some rumors the F-35s will be based at the Câmpia Turzii air base which has recently been modernized by the United States. Câmpia Turzii currently hosts Romanian Mig 21 LanceR jets which will soon be replaced by F-16s acquired from Norway.
