An 'undisclosed' foreign company has approached Ukroboronprom, which is a strategic producer of military weapons and hardware in Ukraine, to supply the Ukrainian Air Force with six Antonov AN-158 twin-engine passenger aircraft.

"Although these aircraft cannot participate in combat, they can carry out special flights to provide everything the Air Force needs in wartime, Ukroboronprom Chief Yuriy Husyev said.

The aircraft will first undergo maintenance and repairs before being deployed.

The AN-158 is a twin-engine passenger aircraft designed by the Ukraine State Enterprise Antonov, and jointly manufactured by Antonov Serial Plant (Ukraine) and Voronezh Aircraft Production Association (Russia). It is a stretched fuselage version of the AN-148 capable of accommodating up to 99 passengers over a range of 4,000km.

The aircraft will come from the Cubana de Aviación airline's fleet which grounded them in 2018 as "multiple and repeating failures have been found in complex systems, built by mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components, as well as computer performance algorithms," in addition to "evidence of design and manufacturing flaws, serious issues in flight control system, cracks in the structure and engine temperature increase above normal parameters."
