Ghana is looking to procure six Aero Vodochody L-39NG aircraft for the Armed Forces of Ghana through a loan agreement worth € 111.3 million ($ 132 million), local media reported in recent days.

The agreement was submitted to the House of Assembly on Monday by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, on behalf of his colleague Dominic Nitiwul. It involves the Czech aircraft manufacturer AERO Vodochody AIROSPACE a.s. as a supplier of six L-39NG jets along with spares, training and support.

The agreement was referred by Parliament Speaker Alban Bagbin to the Defense and Interior Commission for review.

Ghana is already on the AERO Vodochody customer list. Accra previously acquired 8 Aero L-29 Delfin trainer jets (now all retired) and 2 L-39ZO attack jets.

This potential deal confirms African nations' interest in the L-39NG aircraft. Senegal also announced in 2018 that it would order four of them.

The L-39NG is the evolution of the successful L-39 Albatros jet. The L-39NG program began in 2014, with the production of four prototypes. It is marketed in training and light attack variants and is currently being evaluated by various countries, including Slovakia and Hungary.

We believe that Ghana is interested in the attack variant of the L-39NG to be deployed in support of the Super Tucanos. The Brazilian-made turboprop is currently the only combat aircraft in the Ghana Air Force fleet.
