The Nigerian Air Force confirmed on Friday that it will receive 24 Leonardo M-346FA light combat aircraft. The official announcement follows the news on the agreement between Nigeria and Leonardo that we anticipated three years ago. The aircraft will be delivered in four batches of 6 each starting this year.
According to the NAF statement, Leonardo will provide support to the Nigerian M-346FA fleet for at least 25 years. The presence of a Leonardo MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) facility in Africa marked a fundamental point for the finalization of the order.
The NAF will employ the new aircraft for Close air support, Air Interdiction, and tactical reconnaissance missions as well as Advanced Pilot Training, such versatility of the aircraft has been greatly appreciated by the nation.
The two parties will finalize various future meetings to define pilot and ground staff training activities and to delve into details on logistics, maintenance protocols and configuration requirements.
