The air fleet of the Slovenian Armed Forces will soon expand with the introduction of new aircraft. This plan was recently approved by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia which included three new projects in the current plan of Development Programs 2023-2026 (PNR 2023-2026) within the budget of the Slovenian Army.
The additions and amendments to the PNR 2023-2026 provide for the purchase of another tactical transport aircraft, an air defense system, six multipurpose transport helicopters and 106 wheeled combat vehicles for the simultaneous establishment of a group of medium and of a reconnaissance battalion. According to the Government, these new acquisitions are necessary to continue the development and modernization of the Slovenian army in view of the modern security challenges.
With reference to the tactical transport aircraft project, the Government also approved the change in the initially allocated value, which was 87,844,412 euros (VAT included), increasing it to 159,030,340 euros (VAT included).
The project value review resulted from the decision to purchase a second C-27J Spartan aircraft. The purchase of the new aircraft, which will have the same configuration as the first, will take place within the framework of the Italy-Slovenia Government-to-Government (G2G) Agreement signed by the Italian Minister of Defence, Lorenzo Guerini, and the Slovenian Minister of Defence, Matej Tonin, on 17 November 2021, which is aimed at strengthening the bilateral collaboration between the two countries. The contract for the purchase of the first aircraft was signed on March 31, 2022.
The second aircraft will provide an increase in availability and fill gaps in cases where the first aircraft is not available due to technical maintenance.
