An Azerbaijani delegation will arrive in Rome next week to sign some agreements with Italy, including the one for the supply of two Leonardo C-27J multi-role military transport aircraft, according to the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.
According to Il Sole 24 Ore, the incoming order is the result of a long and effective work carried out between the Italian Ministry of Defense and the Azerbaijani counterpart which has made it possible to expand commercial relations between the two nations and has shifted the focus towards the defence industry.
Azerbaijan's appreciation of Italian defense systems was also confirmed during the meeting in Munich between Leonardo's former CEO, Alessandro Profumo, and the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on 18 February. On that occasion the Azeri head of state underlined how Italy is their closest partner in Europe especially thanks to the cooperation with Leonardo.
Azerbaijan had also shown great interest in the Leonardo M-346 advanced trainer and light combat aircraft. Baku signed a letter of intent with Rome in February 2020 linked to the purchase of a dozen jets.

Azerbaijan would become the C-27J's 17th customer if the deal is finalized. Leonardo has received orders for a total of 88 aircraft to date, all of which have been delivered except for the one for Slovenia which is expected to be delivered soon.
