The Reparto Sperimentale Volo - RSV (Italian Air Force Flight Test Wing) has once again left its mark on the Royal International Air Tattoo - RIAT, the largest military air show in the world!
Over the past weekend, the flying displays of the RSV wowed the large crowd at Fairford Air Base, UK, as well as representatives of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and a very special guest. The Italian pilots had the pleasure of meeting actor Tom Cruise who expressed great appreciation for their breathtaking performances.

The aerobatic maneuvers of the Italian demo teams were also appreciated by the organizers of the RIAT who awarded the aircrew of the C-27J Spartan the "The Sir Douglas Bader Trophy" for the best solo demo. The Spartan pilots amazed the audience with a technical demonstration that enhanced the aircraft's flight capabilities with maneuvers uncommon for the type. It is the result of the great skills of ITAF pilots and state-of-the-art platforms developed by the Italian aerospace company Leonardo.
This was not the first recognition for the RSV at the RIAT: the flying display of the Italian C-27J was also awarded in 2011 and 2013.
However, the Spartan's ability to perform 3g tactical maneuvers is only part of what it can do. The C-27J boasts the unique ability to operate from the most rudimentary airstrips and perform short takeoffs and landings (STOL) in extreme environmental condition. In addition, it is able to operate in extreme temperature conditions, -55°C to ISA+ 35°C (i.e. +50°C at sea level) and carry its load in very hot and high areas. It can be quickly configured to carry out tactical transport including troops, cargo, paratroops and cargo airdrop, Medevac/Casevac, VIP but also transport for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief support and firefighting. More than 100 aircraft have already been sold to 16 operators across five continents.
In addition to the Spartan, the RSV participated in the RIAT 2022 with the Eurofighter Typhoon and T-346A jets whose flying displays were also highly acclaimed by the crowd.
