Romania resumes flight operations of MiG-21 LanceRs and sets retirement for mid-2023

After having grounded the MiG-21 fleet of the Romanian Air Force for over a month, the Romanian Ministry of Defense authorized the resumption of flight operations of the type starting from 23 May 2022. The stop had come following too many accidents which involved the aircraft. However, the life of the LanceR is nearing sunset.

The Romanian Air Force was authorized to use the MiG-21 aircraft until mid-May 2023 for the sole execution of aerial surveillance missions and training activities. After that date, the entire MiG-21 fleet will be decommissioned.

In parallel, the Government has taken measures to speed up the procurement process of 32 second-hand F-16 aircraft from Norway, which will form two more combat squadrons. In addition, the Romanian Air Force will initiate all the necessary steps for the acquisition of fifth generation fighters.
