Aircraft, mobile radars, anti-drone defense systems, specialized personnel, command and control capabilities: the Aeronautica Militare (Italian Air Force) has recently deployed a wide range of platforms and systems to increase the surveillance and defense of the airspace above Rome, protect the areas affected by any airborne threats and ensure continuous monitoring of the most significant events.

It was a very complex operation that the Service carried out within the capabilities made available by the Italian Defense to ensure an adequate security framework during the G20 Summit of Heads of State and Government, which was held on 30 and 31 October in Rome.

In detail, the Italian Air Force deployed F-2000 fighters, HH-139A helicopters, Matra AN/TPS-77 mobile radar, Predator surveillance and reconnaissance drones, G-550 CAEW (Conformal Airborne Early Warning) aircraft, P-72A patrol aircraft, KC-767 and KC-130 tanker aircraft, personnel and C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aerial System) systems for the identification and possible neutralization of drones flying over sensitive areas at low altitude. It also ensured the remote control of network services and made the military airports of Ciampino and Pratica di Mare available for the reception of delegations.

The equipment of the Italian Air Force - managed by the Comando Operazioni Aerospaziali (Air and Space Operations Command) - together with those deployed by the other Armed Forces and Police Forces, guaranteed the conduct of the G20 Summit in total safety, through surveillance and integrated defense of the airspace.
