The Italian Navy Operational Raiders Group (Gruppo Operativo Incursori - GOI Marina Militare) recently carried out a complex naval counter-terrorism exercise, aimed at testing the readiness, projection and engagement of the unit. The exercise scenario envisaged a Hostage Rescue Operation (HRO) aboard an Italian merchant ship seized in international waters and far from the motherland. A GOI assault team consisting of a Special Operation Task Unit (SOTU) took off from the Pisa air base, Tuscany, aboard an Italian Air Force C130J aircraft to reach the area of operation with a free-fall air launch, together with rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIB) type Zodiac Hurricane 7.33, also air-launched with Platform Unit Rigid Inflatable Boat Air Delivery technique.

This insertion capacity is called Maritime Craft Aerial Delivery System (MCADS) and allows the GOI to intervene anywhere with maximum speed, through special equipment for the conduct of special operations in the maritime domain. The Italian Navy Raiders are a very valuable unit, they are always ready to conduct operations both in Italy and abroad in coordination with the Ministry of the Interior.

These operations also represent an excellent example of close collaboration with the other Italian Armed Forces which support the strategic projection of the GOI teams through transport aircraft (Italian Air Force) and paratroopers (Italian Army).
