The USAF 388th Fighter Wing recently released amazing air-to-air pictures of two F-35A Lightning IIs assigned to their 4th Fighter Squadron flying over France alongside two Dassault Rafales assigned to 1/4 Gascogne Fighter Squadron, 113 Saint-Dizier-Robinson air base, France. The American F-35 stealth fighters are deployed in France from 10 May to participate in the Atlantic Trident 21 exercise as well as many other events around Europe.

Atlantic Trident 21, taking place at Mont-de-Marsan Air Force Base, May 17-28, 2021, is a joint, multinational exercise involving service members from the U.S., France and the U.K., and is aimed at enhancing fourth and fifth generation integration, combat readiness and fighting capabilities, through conducting complex air operations in a contested multinational joint force environment.

Almost fifty latest generation fighter aircraft such as the French Rafale, the British Typhoon or the American F-35 are practicing combined simulated raids in French airspace with the aim of promoting the development of common procedures, reflecting the high intensity of air combat.

“Interoperability means how to fight together. It’s about increasing exchanges between the most modern fighter jets in the world, sharing our tactical and technical knowledge and improving the responsiveness of our joint operations,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Mickaël, deputy director of the exercise.

The focus of the trilateral exercise is on the constant modernization of the three air forces, innovation and technological performance to enable them to better protect the integrity of an area or territory. The know-how of specialists is mobilized with the crews - mechanics, controllers, communication systems experts, logisticians and many others.

Atlantic Trident is the result of a strategic partnership called the Trilateral Strategic Initiative established among the three participating air forces in 2010. The two previous editions, held in 2015 and 2017, were conducted from Langley Air Force Base (United States).
