Germany aims to equip its Eurofighters with AESA radar and buy new ones. |
According to FlightGlobal, Germany seems ready to proceed with a joint program with Spain to equip the nations’ later-model Eurofighters with active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars.
The media outlet, quoting Kurt Rossner, Airbus Defence & Space’s head of combat aircraft systems, says an agreement should be concluded by the end of this year or early 2020 and deliveries for both nations will begin in 2022. The new "E-Scan Mk1" radar sets will be retrofitted to 110 tranche 2 and 3 jets for Germany, while Spain plans to acquire an initial batch of 19 units.
This configuration is similar to that of the Eurofighters sold in Kuwait and Qatar which already include the "Mk1A" radar.
In addition, Airbus expects a contract from Berlin early next year for 38 new Eurofighters equipped with AESA radar. These are required to replace Tranche 1-standard aircraft.
Airbus also aims to sell further Typhoons to Germany and Spain to replace the Tornado and F/A-18A/B Hortnet aircraft respectively. The company says it is proposing Eurofighters with “strategic capabilities” – including nuclear weapons – and in an electronic combat reconnaissance/suppression of enemy air-defence configuration suitable for use in an escort jammer role.
