From 10 to 12 June, the Aeronautica Militare (Italian Air Force) conducted the cyber defense exercise, led by Re.S.I.A. (Reparto Sistemi Informativi Automatizzati), called "Cyber Eagle 2019".

While in 2019 the Cyber Eagle mainly involved the combat squadrons of the Italian Air Force, this year's edition mainly included transport aircraft belonging to the 46th Air Brigade at Pisa and 14th Wing at Pratica di Mare, Rome.

During the exercise, a team of military experts in the cyber sector simulated dozens of critical events such as the infiltration of malware into military networks, the dissemination of operational data, sending phishing emails and filtering PC data. The CIRT (Computer Incident Response Team) of the two departments involved had to deal with adequate defensive and complex actions and coordinated with all the components of their respective departments, without interrupting the operations of the aircraft and the missions of the departments.

The high technological connotation achieved by the Italian Air Force offers unquestionable operational advantages but, at the same time, implies an increase in vulnerabilities due to an increasingly aggressive cyber threat. It is therefore essential to test, train and implement the defense capability of the system, through the "front line" involvement of the flight units.

"This exercise marks an evolving maturity and contributes to considerably increasing the awareness of the threat and of the actions of contrast and mitigation. This is a clear indicator of the direction that the Armed Forces wants to follow in cyber defense,” General Giovanni Fantuzzi, Commander of the Logistic Command, said.
