Poland to buy F-35 under Harpia modernization program. |
During a recent press conference, the Polish defense minister, Mariusz BÅ‚aszczak, announced that he had signed a military modernization plan document that envisages a spending of 185 billion zlotys ($ 49 billion) on new weapons and military equipment by 2026. This program includes the acquisition of 32 fifth generation fighter aircraft as a priority, according to the minister. He has not named the F-35, but it is undoubtedly the only fifth-generation aircraft currently available on the market.
BÅ‚aszczak said that the Harpia armed forces modernization program is a priority. The nation intends to replace all soviet-era aircraft (MiG-29 and Su-22) with modern platforms. In addition to the JSF, they are planning to introduce additional F-16 jets that will be purchased from the U.S. surplus and upgraded to the most advanced variant.
Lockheed Martin began the F-35A sales campaign in Poland several years ago, underlining that their aircraft is the only fifth-generation fighter currently mass-produced and its combat capabilities are unique.
